Sitka Gear Stormfront Jacket, Optifade,

We often hear that Gore-Tex will always fail under heavy rain, and are constantly battling consumer forums that talk down it’s functionality in Alaska. That being said, we also understand that the only way to combat this is to spend the time with our customers to educate them on the reality. There are multiple types of Gore-Tex, all having their specific end uses. Most importantly is the inner and outer face fabric’s durability. For example: The Cloudburst series from Sitka, along with many other big brand name companies such as Outdoor Research, Arc’Teryx, and Simms who all construct many different Jackets with a 2 layer construction. A 2 layer Gore Product is designed for quick burst of rain / precipitation. It generally is highlighted by its ultralight and packable properties, however we MUST note that when you save on weight, there is bound to be a compromise. Although the Cloudbust series has it’s place in the Hunting Industry, at the end of the day, it is not built for Alaska.

We like to focus on the 3 layer construction and those products that are in fact designed for the rugged, harsh conditions that we encounter in the shale infested backcountry of Alaska’s mountains. The Stormfront and Coldfront series both incorporate not only a 3 layer construction, but a much higher denier outer face fabric to help protect that waterproof breathable membrane. The Coldfront is the go to rain jacket for Brown Bear, Moose, and Caribou hunts, or any hunt where weight isn’t the #1 priority, but as a hunter you still want a packable set of rain gear. The Coldfront is lined with a thin fleece to help keep your core temperature up when on the move in late season. The old saying up here in Alaska is there isn’t anything that will hold up like a Helley Hansen Guide Jacket. While we LOVE the Guide Jacket from Helly, we also recognize that this industry is constantly progressing, along with it, the technology. The Coldfront and Stormfront Jacket’s have been Guide tested from the beaches of the Alaska Peninsula, to the gates of the Arctic Circle and we are confident in their ability to keep our hunters warm, dry and most importantly, in the game when the weather gets bad.
